One of the first things I ask when I meet an engaged couple, is for them to tell me about the proposal. I guess you could call me a romantic:)
When I met Jenny I asked her this very question, and here is what she shared with me…
“I came home from a week in Texas with my mom and when I walked in, Kevin said my birthday present was on the table. When I turned around there was a laptop on the table and of course I was very excited because I had been wanting one for a while. He told me to open it and play around. As the picture came up it was a picture of my ring with the words “will you” under it. I was confused and when I turned around he was on one knee holding the ring in the box. After that I don’t remember everything he said, but I was crying, happy…” Isn’t that clever and romantic?
At our first meeting I met Jenny at Starbucks. I instantly loved her pink notebook, her shiny blonde hair, her smile and all of the details she shared about her family, how she and Kevin met, got engaged, and most importantly what she had planned so far for the wedding. I won’t give away any details but I can say it is going to be FUN!
I walked out of Starbucks (favorite place for wedding consults:) with hopes that I would be able to capture her wedding day for her. The second time we met, Kevin came along and he wasn’t shy about sharing that he wasn’t really too sure about the purpose of the engagement photo shoot, or too keen on the idea. BUT…he also made clear that he would go along if it would make Jenny happy. Kevin is quite the gentleman, with a pretty tough exterior. There was a point in the meeting where Kevin made a couple jokes and between those and the tenderness in his eyes for Jenny, I decided I shouldn’t be too afraid of him:)
When we met up for the engagement session, I was really excited to take advantage of Kevin’s serious side in some of the photographs. I just love Jenny’s femininity in contrast with the edginess of the environment, graffiti and Kevin;)

I guess it was inevitable, that after being with me acting like a goof ball, it was only a matter of time before the laughter came out.

This photo was taken a few minutes after Kevin did something that just awed me. There was a wasp flying around Jenny while they were standing up there (she smells as pretty as she looks). All of a sudden quick as lightening Kevin caught the wasp and squished it in his fist. He gave his hand a one two shake- shook off the sting – and was ready for the photo, with no sign of the wasp sting showing on his face. I was pretty impressed.

I love this next photograph. The light is so soft and bathes both of them, complimenting Jenny’s femininity and just slightly softening Kevin’s eyes.

And as you can see being near Jenny brings out Kevin’s gentle side.

Engagement sessions are a great opportunity for the couple and photographer to get to know one another without all the pressure of the wedding day. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Jenny and Kevin better during our session, and I know I will be able to do an even better job now at capturing their wedding day this upcoming spring.
