Campbell | Family Session

What was going on in your life that made you want to have photograph taken?
I was branching out as an artist and a wild woman and I was taking my family to Squam Art Workshops, including my new six month old baby, Ivy, and wanted to have some photos taken to capture the bravery of my family as we set off to art camp to experience what most attend as solitary individuals. It felt very courageous to still be breastfeeding and to pack everyone off to the east coast from the west.

What pulled you to work with Thea?
I wanted to memorize the feelings we were sharing as a family on a big adventure with the help of Thea’s brilliant eye for joy, courage and color.

What was unique about the experience of working with Thea?
Thea has the ability to nurture her clients as if they were her own family and create a lot of comfort around the photographic process. It was also unique that we were already in an inspiring setting and she drew us out into the sunlight-dappled lane and captured us playing together, which was something very different than what we’d ever experienced.

What was your favorite photo and why?
There is a shot that she took of us where we are walking with our backs to the camera, up a divine dirt path, all four of us.

Did anything shift for you during your session, afterwards or after seeing the photographs? Can you describe it?
The prominent take-away was that we got to see ourselves, beautifully softened in the New Hampshire sunlight, from an observers point of view doing the impossible: we were the first family to venture into this large, inspired retreat and do what we do as a team, while weaving in all of the aspects of art and community. It was a pivotal time in our lives, having had our second baby, a shift was already occurring for us on soul levels: we were taking risks to live the life we really desired for us and our children. Seeing us there in the woods together helped me realize the commitment my partner and I have to living inspired, creative lives AND taking care of our family. Thea could really see that we were doing something special and she gave us the gift of keeping it sacred in our memories.

If you had to sum up the entire experience in one word, what would it be?

Transformational.
