What was your favorite photo and why?
It is impossible to choose just one favorite! All of the photos stand out in their own way. Our family looks so natural and “un-posed” and that is the quality we wanted. Thea just has an eye for capturing moments that are spontaneous, and the photos reflect a moment in time for your family.
What did you enjoy most about working with Thea?
What I love aout Thea is that from the first phone conversation to plan our shoot, she makes you feel as if you have known one another for a long time, and as if your shoot is the most important she has ever done. I immediately felt at ease, and loved the way Thea listened to my ideas. I also loved that she really took the time to get to know us even before the shoot. At the shoot, my kids just fell in love with her and we all just had a great time together. Thea has a way of making a shoot feel more like just a good time running and playing. I’m not sure my kids even realized their pictures were being taken, as they were encouraged to just have fun and be themselves. In the end, the photos reflect just that — our family together, just being ourselves.
How was working with Thea unique, compared to other photographers or portrait studios you may have worked with in the past?
I used to take the kids to a portrait studio once a year. Once my husband and I added ourselves into the shoot for a family portrait. I was disappointed with the way it came out, mostly because it is posed, and no one looks natural — in fact everyone just looks uncomfortable! Not what I hoped to portray. I feel that photos are special because they are meant to capture a moment. You can’t really accomplish that with posed studio photos, and it is especially hard with small children. I think we are all at our best when just being ourselves. Thea is unique in her style for many reasons. First, she is truly an artist. When I first saw her gallery on her website, my husband and I looked at each other and said, “that’s it! That’s what we want!” But it is Thea herself that made us all feel as though we were the most special shoot she has ever done. She is truly in the moment with you and your family.
If you had to sum up the entire experience in one word, what would it be?
Do I have to choose just one word? Then it would have to be “perfect.” I wouldn’t change any part of it. Not only are we over the moon about the end result, but the experience itself was something we will all remember. My kids still talk about Thea, and how much fun they had with her. You could have a photographer with a great eye, but if the photographer can’t connect with your family and make everyone feel comfortable, your end result might not be what you had hoped. Thea is just full of warmth and enthusiasm, not only for her art but for really getting to know you and your family.
